He wouldn’t go as far as to say who would be the club’s starting third baseman heading into 2024, but you’d have to think that it’s Brett Baty’s job to lose — even after his disappointing 2023 season. The 24-year-old slashed just .212/.275/.323 with nine homers, 34 RBI and a pair of stolen bases in 389 plate appearances with the big league club in 2023.

Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports that Erick Fedde’s decision has come down to the White Sox and the Mets.

The 30-year-old right-hander is expected to land a two-year contract worth more than $5 million annually. He resurrected his career with an unbelievable season for the NC Dinos in the Korea Baseball Organization in 2023 where he went 20-6 with a 2.00 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 209 strikeouts in 180 1/3 innings. Feinsand also notes that the deal could be finalized as early as Tuesday. Stay tuned.

Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports that the Cardinals are interested in a reunion with right-hander Jordan Hicks.

Heyman also notes that the Orioles, Astros and Rangers are among the other teams that are interested in the flame-throwing hurler. Hicks compiled a 3.29 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and an 81/32 K/BB ratio over 65 2/3 innings between the Cardinals and Blue Jays during the 2023 campaign. He’s likely to wind up in a setup role in most of those landing spots, which would limit his overall appeal from a fantasy perspective.

According to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union Tribune, the Padres are involved in discussions to bring back catcher Gary Sánchez.

Sánchez provided some pop for the Padres in 2023, crushing 19 homers in only 72 games, so it’s understandable to see that they’re interested in bringing him back. Acee notes that while no deal is imminent, there is interest on both sides. The deal is expected to land somewhere in the $7 million range annually.

Scott Mitchell of TSN reports that the Blue Jays have been receiving calls from teams interested in acquiring infielder Davis Schneider.

The 24-year-old put himself on the map with a strong season in the minor leagues in 2023 — then went on to hit .276/.404/.603 with eight homers, 20 RBI, one stolen base and a 43/21 K/BB ratio across 141 plate appearances at the big league level. If he’s able to land a regular role in the big leagues — with the Jays or elsewhere — he could have some late round appeal as a middle infield option in deeper fantasy leagues.

Astros’ general manager Dana Brown said Monday that Forrest Whitley will report to spring training as a reliever.

The oft-injured 26-year-old hurler was also given a fourth option year posted a disappointing 5.70 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and a 32/17 K/BB ratio over 30 innings in eight appearances (six starts) at Triple-A Sugar Land in 2023. Brown also told reporters that they will get a fourth option year on Whitley. It’s hard to envision him carving out any sort of fantasy value if he’s stuck in the middle innings for the Astros.

Athletics general manager David Forst told reporters Monday that Mason Miller will work out of the team’s bullpen in 2024.

Forst noted that a move back to the starting rotation can’t be ruled out at some point, but as of now they’re looking at a bullpen role for him — and possibly as their closer. The flame-throwing 25-year-old registered a 3.78 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and a 38/16 K/BB ratio over 33 1/3 innings in his first taste of big league action last season. If he does indeed open the season as the A’s closer, his fantasy draft stock will soar, but it certainly diminishes his long-term fantasy outlook.

Angels signed RHP José Marte to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

The 27-year-old hurler registered an uninspiring 8.68 ERA, 2.25 WHIP and a 7/7 K/BB ratio over 9 1/3 innings in his 10 appearances with the Angels during the 2023 season. He’ll continue to function as extra bullpen depth for the Halos.

Brandon Lowe (knee) told reporters on Monday that he’s fully recovered from his broken right kneecap and should have no limitations for the remainder of the offseason.

That means Lowe should be able to go through his regular offseason routine without any issues. He had his season end prematurely when he fouled a ball off of his right knee on September 22. Overall, injuries limited Lowe to 109 games in 2023 — where he slashed .231/.328/.443 with 21 homers, 68 RBI and a career-high seven stolen bases in 436 plate appearances.
