Texans QB Davis Mills said he's competing for the team's starting job.

"I keep working on myself," Mills said after the Texans OTA session on Tuesday. "I put my head down and work every day." Houston has reportedly rebuffed trade inquiries into Mills, who started 15 games last year and managed 17 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. Only Baker Mayfield had a worse completion rate over expected than Mills in 2022. C.J. Stroud will start Week 1 barring some kind of catastrophic setback in training camp. Mills could be on another roster by then.

New Texans coach DeMeco Ryans confirmed the team will be adding to its quarterback room.

Ryans was diplomatic when confirming the obvious at his introductory press conference. "We understand we have one quarterback here on our roster (Davis Mills) and we have to add more to that position," Ryans said. "The quarterback is one piece." A third-round rookie overachiever in 2021, Mills not only plateaued as a sophomore, he regressed. Mills' 15 picks led the league. His supporting cast was an issue, but Mills did nothing to elevate it. With the Texans in position to draft a new franchise quarterback, the question for Mills isn't if he will start, but if the new coaching staff even wants him as the No. 2.

Davis Mills completed 22-of-38 passes for 298 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions in Houston's 32-31, Week 18 win over the Colts.

It looked as if Mills had sealed the No.1 overall pick for the Texans after he threw a pair of disastrous interceptions, including a pick-six. But with two minutes left, he drove the Texans down the field, converting a fourth-and-12, then heaving a fourth-and-20 bomb through Colts S Rodney Thomas' hands that fell directly into Jordan Akins' lap. The Texans went for two and converted, taking the lead. Mills finishes his second season with an 3118/17/15 line as an overmatched starter, and has the chance to finish with the interception crown pending later results. It's possible that the Texans have to turn to him in year three again if injuries strike or if they slow-play a rookie starter, but it is completely evident that he is not the quarterback of the future. It is also possible he is traded if the Texans bring in a new front office. The most likely scenario is that this season signals the beginning of a long career as a backup.

Davis Mills completed 22-of-40 passes for 202 scoreless yards in Houston's 31-3, Week 17 loss to the Jaguars, adding four carries for 33 yards.

Mills was nearly picked twice, with one ball glancing off Andre Cisco's helmet and another initially called a pick that flung itself out of Jordan Akins hands in the final minutes reversed on replay. He missed several balls to the deep sideline and there's little doubt at this point that his NFL future is more "backup and desperation starter" than "actual starter." Mills will potentially be a superflex QB2 next week on account of his matchup with a ghastly Colts team that could be folding just as quickly as the Texans.

Davis Mills completed 17-of-28 passes for 178 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in Houston's 19-14, Week 16 win over Tennessee, adding four carries for eight yards.

Mills led a nice go-ahead drive with a 37-yard target to Amari Rodgers, then found Brandin Cooks for a leaping touchdown in the back of the end zone in the fourth quarter. Everything else he did in the game was varying levels of hilarious or brutal, including a red-zone fumble that Rex Burkhead fell on for a score, a few aborted snap fumbles, several balls that were not even close or late to the target, and his pick in the third quarter to re-tie him with Matt Ryan for the NFL lead. Lovie Smith doesn't want Mills to throw and it's not hard to understand why. Mills will put his 2-0 record as a starter against the Jaguars on the line in Week 17 as a desperation superflex.

Davis Mills completed 12-of-24 passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns in Houston's 30-24, Week 15 loss to the Chiefs, adding five carries for 25 yards and an additional touchdown.

Playing often as the Jeff Driskel package proved ineffective, the kindest thing you can say about Mills is he worked with what he had. His rushing touchdown out of structure of the play was a red zone scramble where he was left untouched, and his touchdown passes delivered by penalties and turnovers were nice strikes. Unfortunately, given a chance to win the game, Mills fumbled on a scramble and kicked the ball forward off his shin right into a pile of Chiefs. Mills will remain a down-bad superflex option on a full slate next week against the Titans.

KPRC2's Aaron Wilson reports that the Texans are "expected" to keep using both Davis Mills and Jeff Driskel next week.

Driskel qualifies at tight end in some leagues. No, really! He does! They converted him last year in a move that we can only call "very Texans." Any tight end with a pulse is worth rostering in 2022, even if the Texans won't be catching anybody off-guard this week. Also Davis Mills is probably the stone cold worst superflex quarterback going right now if Driskel is taking his red zone snaps as he did last week.

Texans head coach Lovie Smith would not commit to rotating quarterbacks in Week 15 against the Chiefs.

â??I thought it was effective yesterday," Smith said Monday of the quarterback rotation between Davis Mills and Jeff Driskel used in Week 14's loss to the Cowboys. "Two different flavors, thatâ??s always tough for a defense to prepare for. â?¦ That's what we did yesterday. No more than that. We'll see exactly what we do that gives us the best chance. We're just transitioning over to the Chiefs right now. So we'll see how that game planning goes.â? Using both signal callers against the Cowboys led to 23 points, a veritable offensive explosion for Houston. Mills threw for 175 scoreless yards against Dallas while Driskel rushed seven times for 36 yards and threw for 38 yards and a touchdown as the team's red zone read-option QB. The team's quarterback rotation effectively makes neither player worth using in the deepest fantasy formats.

Davis Mills completed 16-of-21 passes for 175 yards and an interception in Houston's 27-23, Week 14 loss to the Cowboys.

Mills was platooned with Jeff Driskel, ruining whatever superflex value he had to begin with. We don't know if this will continue last week but as it is the only bright spot the Texans have enjoyed in weeks, we'd be surprised if it doesn't. Mills will be a risky superflex play against the Chiefs in Week 14.

NFL insider Aaron Wilson reports Davis Mills will start in Week 14 against the Cowboys.

The Kyle Allen Experiment went just about as poorly as anyone could have predicted, putting Mills back under center for the Texans' Week 14 slaughter at the hands of the Cowboys. Allen was as bad as he's ever been over his two starts for Houston, completing 59 percent of his passes for two scores and four picks. No quarterback had a lower completion rate over expected than Allen over the past two weeks. Mills is an upgrade for Nico Collins and Brandin Cooks if Cooks decides to play in Week 14.

Davis Mills will not start in Week 12 against the Dolphins.

Houston will be helmed by Kyle Allen for Week 12. Mills has been a trainwreck, tossing a league-leading 11 interceptions while also taking 28 sacks. Houston hasn't won since Week 5 and has peaked at 24 points in a game this year. Mills' biggest accomplishment has been putting his team in a position to secure a top-five draft pick. That's before factoring in Cleveland's first-round selection, which Houston also holds. Kyle Allen isn't likely to fair any better as the starter, but trotting out Mills for another week was too much for Smith and company to handle. Allen won't be a viable fantasy option versus Miami.

Zach LaVine (right foot soreness), DeMar DeRozan (left ankle sprain), and Alex Caruso (left toe strain) are questionable for Thursday’s game against the Bucks.

LaVine and DeRozan exited Tuesday’s blowout loss to the Celtics due to their respective injuries, hence their inclusion on the injury report. As for Caruso, he’s been on the report quite often recently. The players with the most to gain should LaVine and/or DeRozan sit are Coby White and Patrick Williams, as their respective usages would increase substantially.

Edwards took a hard fall on a dunk attempt during the third quarter of Tuesday’s win over the Thunder and did not return. With the doubtful tag, it appears likely that a spot will open up in the Timberwolves’ starting lineup. If so, Troy Brown Jr. could be the next man up, but he hasn’t been the most reliable fantasy option in the past. If anything, Mike Conley may be the player whose fantasy value is boosted the most if Edwards sits.

Hampson figures to open next season in a versatile utility role for the rebuilding Royals. The 29-year-old former top prospect, who never quite blossomed into the elite batting average and stolen base threat fantasy managers envisioned during his Rockies tenure, posted a .729 OPS with three homers and five steals in 252 plate appearances last year for the Marlins in a bench role.

Walker was always a long-shot to play this week, so a doubtful tag isn’t a surprise. He will look to return in Week 14 versus the 49ers, though, after not practicing at all this week, that’s not a given for the second-year running back. Until he is healthy, Zach Charbonnet will dominate the work in the Seattle backfield. Charbonnet will straddle the RB1/2 border in a tough matchup with the Cowboys’ defense this week.
