Jakob Junis was pulled from Saturday’s outing against the Dodgers due to tightness in his neck.

Prior to exiting, the 31-year-old hurler had allowed just one hit while striking out one over 1 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball. The severity of the issue — as well as how much time Junis may miss — are not yet known. The Giants should have an update on his status on Sunday.

Sandy Alcantara acknowledged Saturday that his UCL sprain will cost him the remainder of the 2023 season.

The 28-year-old hurler had been working his way back in an attempt to help out the Marlins should they reach the postseason, but now he’ll be shut down for the duration of the season. Alcantara also noted that the next step in his recovery haven’t been determined yet, and that his availability for the start of the 2024 campaign is yet to be determined. This represents the first time in Alcantara’s career that he has landed on the injured list with an arm injury.

Adolis García went 2-for-3 and scored both of the Rangers’ runs in Saturday’s critical 2-0 victory over the Mariners.

The 30-year-old outfielder smacked a one-out double off of Logan Gilbert in the second inning, then dashed around to score on a two-out RBI single by Mitch Garver. García then drew a two-out walk in the fourth inning, swiped second base and scored on an RBI single off the bat of Jonah Heim. With his two-hit attack, the 30-year-old slugger is now slashing .244/.326/.496 with 35 homers, 102 RBI and nine stolen bases.

Aroldis Chapman slammed the door on the Mariners in the ninth inning on Saturday, getting the final two outs to protect a two-run advantage.

The Rangers had hinted that Chapman wouldn’t be available on Saturday, but he was called upon with a man on first and one out in the ninth inning. He issued a walk to Jarred Kelenic to put the tying run on base, but battled back to get Sam Haggerty on a fly ball to center and Luis Torrens on a ground out to shortstop to end the game. For the season, the 35-year-old southpaw now sports a 2.83 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and a 102/35 K/BB ratio over his 57 1/3 innings of work to go along with six saves.

Jordan Montgomery delivered a dominant performance in Saturday night’s victory over the Mariners, striking out six batters over seven innings of shutout baseball.

The 30-year-old left-hander scattered five hits and two walks on the evening. Montgomery piled up 15 swings and misses on 102 pitches on the night — seven of those on his changeup — while posting a CSW of 26 percent. With the victory, the Rangers now sit — for the time being — atop the American League West, half a game ahead of the Astros and a full game ahead of the Mariners. Montgomery will look to finish the regular season strong as he totes a 3.25 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and a 161/46 K/BB ratio (182 2/3 innings) into a rematch against Logan Gilbert and the Mariners on Thursday evening in Arlington.

Ty France went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles as the Mariners were shut out by the Rangers on Saturday evening in Texas.

As a team, the Mariners scratched out just six hits in the contest — with France the only member of their offense to tally more than one. Both of his hits were singles and the M’s were never able to cash him — or anyone else — in during the game. With his two-hit night, the 29-year-old first baseman is slashing .249/.336/.358 with 10 homers and 56 RBI in 634 plate appearances. With the loss, the Mariners now sit a half game out of the Wild Card race — looking up at the Astros.

Bryan Reynolds smacked a three-run homer on Saturday night as the Pirates erased a nine-run deficit to stun the Reds in Cincinnati

The Pirates fell behind 9-0 early in this one and had to try to dig their way out of that massive hole. Reynolds helped that cause with his three-run bomb off of Alex Young in the sixth inning — pulling the Pirates to within three runs at 9-6. He was also hit by a pitch and scored the go-ahead run on an RBI single by Jack Suwinski in the eighth inning. Reynolds drew a walk in the ballgame as well, finishing the night 1-for-4. On the season, he’s slashing .269/.336/.470 to go with 23 homers and 82 RBI.

Carlos Santana’s 300th career homer was a three-run blast off the Marlins’ A.J. Puk on Saturday.

It was a big day for Brewers milestones, as Christian Yelich picked up his 1,500th hit. The homer was Santana’s 22nd, his high total since 2019. He’s the 159th player in major league history to reach 300 homers. Just last week, he became the 303rd player to reach 1,000 RBI.

Anthony Santander went 3-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs on Saturday night, leading the Orioles to a 2-1 victory over the Guardians.

The 28-year-old outfielder opened the scoring in the contest with a run-scoring double off of Cal Quantrill in the top half of the first inning. He then added to their advantage with an RBI single in the sixth inning that made it a 2-0 ballgame. With his three-hit attack, Santander is now slashing a healthy .260/.329/.479 with 27 long balls, 91 RBI and five stolen bases.

Andrés Giménez spoiled John Means’ no-hit bid on Saturday night, crushing a two-out solo homer in the seventh inning.

That 406-foot blast pulled the Guardians to within a run at 2-1, but would wind up being their lone tally in the ballgame. The 25-year-old infielder finished the night 1-for-3 and is now hitting .253/.317/.399 with 14 homers, 61 RBI and 30 stolen bases on the season.

Cal Quantrill pitched well in a losing effort against the Orioles on Saturday night, allowing just one run on five hits over his four innings of work.

The 28-year-old right-hander walked four and struck out four batters on the evening. The lone tally against him came on an RBI double off the bat of Anthony Santander in the top half of the first inning. Quantrill generated 13 swings and misses on 93 pitches on the night, posting a CSW of 30 percent. He’ll look to finish the regular season strong as he carries a 5.13 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and a 55/34 K/BB ratio (94 2/3 innings) into Saturday’s matchup against the Tigers in Detroit.

Hyun Jin Ryu was tagged for five runs in 4 1/3 innings Saturday against the Rays.

Ryu gave up homers to Yandy Díaz, Josh Lowe and Christian Bethancourt before being lifted in the fifth. The five runs allowed were a season high. He surrendered four runs in his first start back from Tommy John on Aug. 1, but he hadn’t allowed more than three in eight outings since. He’ll need to bounce back next time out if he hopes to be part of the Jays’ postseason rotation, though obviously quite a bit still has to happen before the Jays will need a fourth starter in October.

After the closer gave up two runs and took a loss Saturday, manager John Schneider said Jordan Romano was pitching with a cracked fingernail.

The Jays knew that it happened in his appearance Friday, but they used him today anyway. Unfortunately, Romano proved ineffective, giving up hits to four of the six batters he faced and taking a blown save and a loss to the Rays in the bottom of the ninth. He’ll presumably get at least Sunday off now, opening up the possibility of a save for Erik Swanson.

Bryce Harper had a solo homer and a two-run single Saturday in the Phillies’ 7-5 defeat of the Mets.

The single overpowered Pete Alonso at first, deflecting off him and into right field. The homer gave him his ninth 20-homer season at age 30. He’s hit .294/.410/.574 with 17 homers in 65 games during the second half of the season.

Zack Wheeler was charged with five runs — three earned — over seven innings Saturday in a victory over the Mets.

It wasn’t peak Wheeler, but it was good enough to move him to 4-0 in his last six starts. He improved to 13-6 with a 3.64 ERA overall. The Phillies are expected to have him and Taijuan Walker switch rotation spots this week, meaning Wheeler will face the Pirates on Thursday instead of the Mets on Friday. He’ll then start the team’s Wild Card opener.

Luis Robert Jr. hit a 311-foot homer in the ninth inning Saturday to lead the White Sox to a 1-0 win over the Red Sox.

There’s only one place in MLB to hit a 311-foot, non-inside-the-park homer and that’s down the right field line at Fenway. Robert’s just barely cleared the short wall to the left of the Pesky Pole, giving the White Sox a 1-0 lead that Bryan Shaw held on to in the bottom of the ninth. It was Robert’s 38th homer. Two more would make him the eighth different White Sox player to reach 40 in a season. Todd Frazier did it last in 2016.

Dylan Cease struck out 11 batters over seven scoreless innings Saturday against the Red Sox.

Nick Pivetta matched him for seven, so Cease didn’t get the win in what ended up being a 1-0 victory for the White Sox. Cease’s 11 strikeouts were a season high, topping the total of 10 he had achieved three times. This was also the fourth time this year that he went without walking a batter. As hot and cold as he’s run, it’s not at all a coincidence that three of those starts in which he’s gone without a walk were also games in which he reached double figures in strikeouts. Cease will head into his final start 7-8 with a 4.66 ERA.

Nick Pivetta pitched seven shutout innings Saturday in a no-decision against the White Sox.

Pivetta allowed just three hits, walked one and struck out seven in what was easily his best start since returning to the rotation earlier this month. That Pivetta was so effective in relief this year should ensure that he’s back with the Red Sox for his last year of arbitration eligibility next season. This winter will determine whether there will be one or two rotation openings up for grabs among himself, Kutter Crawford, Tanner Houck and maybe Garrett Whitlock next spring.

Orioles’ manager Brandon Hyde told reporters on Saturday that Ryan Mountcastle has made nice progress in his recovery from left AC joint inflammation and he’s likely to return from the injured list when first eligible on Wednesday.

Mountcastle hasn’t played since September 13 due to the shoulder issue. It sounds like he’ll return in time to get a few games in order to get his timing back before the postseason begins. Prior to landing on the injured list, Mountcastle was hitting .269/.327/.453 with 18 homers, 67 RBI and three swipes across 459 plate appearances.
