The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports the Blue Jays met with free agent superstar Shohei Ohtani on Monday in Florida.

Ohtani’s free agency has been shrouded in mystery so far, but it appears the Blue Jays are seriously in the mix to land the generational superstar, who is expected to make his decision in the next few days. ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported earlier this week that the Dodgers, Cubs and Angels are also still in the mix. It’s a bit unclear whether teams like the Braves and Giants are lurking here as well. Get your popcorn ready, folks.

Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports that Erick Fedde’s decision has come down to the White Sox and the Mets.

The 30-year-old right-hander is expected to land a two-year contract worth more than $5 million annually. He resurrected his career with an unbelievable season for the NC Dinos in the Korea Baseball Organization in 2023 where he went 20-6 with a 2.00 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 209 strikeouts in 180 1/3 innings. Feinsand also notes that the deal could be finalized as early as Tuesday. Stay tuned.

According to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union Tribune, the Padres are involved in discussions to bring back catcher Gary Sánchez.

Sánchez provided some pop for the Padres in 2023, crushing 19 homers in only 72 games, so it’s understandable to see that they’re interested in bringing him back. Acee notes that while no deal is imminent, there is interest on both sides. The deal is expected to land somewhere in the $7 million range annually.

Brandon Lowe (knee) told reporters on Monday that he’s fully recovered from his broken right kneecap and should have no limitations for the remainder of the offseason.

That means Lowe should be able to go through his regular offseason routine without any issues. He had his season end prematurely when he fouled a ball off of his right knee on September 22. Overall, injuries limited Lowe to 109 games in 2023 — where he slashed .231/.328/.443 with 21 homers, 68 RBI and a career-high seven stolen bases in 436 plate appearances.

Astros’ general manager Dana Brown told reporters on Monday that he has absolutely no intention of trading third baseman Alex Bregman.

There had been rumblings that the Astros could be open to moving the star third baseman — as Jim Duquette of MLB Network had noted that the Astros “are not gonna pay” what Bregman and his agent Scott Boras will be looking for in free agency. It sounds like — at least for time being though — that he’ll be staying put. Barring a contract extension, Bregman is slated to hit the open market following the 2024 campaign.

Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports that right-hander Erick Fedde is close to finalizing a two-year contract with an unspecified MLB team.

It didn’t take long into the Winter Meetings for the vaunted mystery team to show up. Feinsand notes that the deal is expected to surpass $5 million annually. The 30-year-old hurler was a revelation for the NC Dinos in the Korea Baseball Organization in 2023 — going 20-6 with a minuscule 2.00 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and a 209/35 K/BB ratio over 180 1/3 innings in his 30 starts. It sounds like this one should be wrapped up soon.

According to Jim Bowden of CBS Sports, the Diamondbacks have expressed interest in reuniting with free agent slugger J.D. Martinez.

It seems there’s still a chance that he’ll return to the Dodgers to play alongside buddy Mookie Betts once again in Los Angeles, but if those two sides aren’t able to come to an agreement the Diamondbacks could very well be in play here. Remember, Martinez put up a ridiculous 1.107 OPS and mashed 29 home runs in just 62 games with the D’Backs after a deadline deal from the Tigers in 2017. The Diamondbacks have also been linked to Justin Turner as they’re looking to add another potent bat as a designated hitter in the middle of their lineup.

Mets’ new manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters on Monday that star closer Edwin Díaz is fully healthy.

It’s not surprising to hear that he’s fully recovered — as there was a chance he could have made it back in September if the Mets were in the playoff hunt — but it’s always nice to receive confirmation. Mendoza was hesitant to say that Díaz would enter spring training without any restrictions though — noting that the club will put together a plan for him that makes sense. He should once again be considered among the elite closing options heading into 2024 fantasy drafts.

Dodgers’ manager Dave Roberts appeared on MLB Network’s High Heat on Monday and said that Mookie Betts will be the team’s starting 2B in 2024.

While it was never a question that Betts would be a starter in 2024, there was some doubt as to where he would play. The 31-year-old had been a full-time outfielder since Boston converted him from middle infield prior to making his MLB debut in 2014. As a big leaguer, Betts had only appeared in 30 games at 2B in his first eight seasons before starting 62 games there for the Dodgers in 2023. He graded out just below average with a -1 Outs Above Average despite putting up an Outs Above Average of 2 in center field and -1 in right field. Roberts suggested that moving Betts to second base would provide some relief for Mookie, physically, and give him a better chance to be in the lineup as much as possible. With Betts locked in at 2B in 2024, that should be good news for James Outman’s playing time, as well as the potential playing time for newly re-signed outfielder Jason Heyward.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts spoke to the media on Monday and said that he believes “it’s fair to say [Kershaw] will pitch in ’24.”

Roberts went on to mention that the only question is the timing and what team Kershaw will pitch for. Earlier in the offseason, Kershaw underwent a procedure to repair the gleno-humeral ligaments and his left shoulder capsule, so he will miss the first few months of the season at minimum. Roberts and Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman have both spoken publicly this offseason about wanting Kershaw back in L.A., and while a reunion does appear likely, it’s not a sure thing at this point in the offseason. We wouldn’t expect any word on Kershaw’s future for another few weeks at least.

According to MLB.com’s Jeff Jones, the Pirates have expressed interest in free agent RHP Jack Flaherty.

The Pirates are allegedly interested in adding Flaherty on a short-term contract, so they’re monitoring his free agency with the veteran right-hander looking to sign a long-term deal as of now. However, Flaherty is also coming off of a rough season where he pitched to a 4.99 ERA and 1.58 WHIP in 144 1/3 innings for the Cardinals and Orioles, so his market may not be enthusiastic. Still only 28-years-old, the Pirates are hoping Flaherty might be interested in a shorter deal with the hopes of recouping some of his value on the open market, but there’s no indication now that the right-hander would be interested in that kind of move.

According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, the Braves intend to trade LHP Marco Gonzales.

Gonzales was just acquired overnight as part of a trade that sent Jarred Kelenic to the Braves. It appears that the veteran left-hander is not in Atlanta’s plans for the 2024 season, and they will be looking to move him as part of an upcoming future move. Gonzales, 31, underwent elbow surgery after posting a 5.22 ERA in 10 starts last season but is expected to be ready for Opening Day, so he should be in somebody’s rotation for the start of the season.

The Mariners engaged the Rays on both Randy Arozarena and Isaac Paredes earlier in the offseason, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.

Rosenthal says the Mariners didn’t have room in their budget to acquire hitters when talks first took place, but they should now after shedding $19 million in 2024 dollars in the Jarred Kelenic dump. The Rays would presumably be interested in one of the Mariners’ young starters in an Arozarena deal.

Merrifield has split time between second base and the outfield pretty evenly the last two seasons. The 34-year-old hit .272/.318/.382 with 26 steals in 145 games for the Blue Jays in 2023. It’s the third straight year he finished with an OPS+ in the 90-95 range.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan didn’t have the Braves among his five teams in the running for Ohtani yesterday, and last night’s Jarred Kelenic trade, while certainly not ruling anything out, doesn’t really fit with an Ohtani pursuit, given that the Braves just took on a bunch of money to upgrade in left field. It’d still be quite a surprise if Ohtani landed in Atlanta.

Unfortunately for them, teams appear to be more interested in Lars Nootbaar. O’Neill is entering his walk year and has thoroughly disappointed apart from his stellar 2021 season. Carlson is eligible for arbitration for the first time, though he won’t make much after struggling in 76 games last season. If the Cardinals move an outfielder, it’d seem to make it more likely that Masyn Winn will get to stay in the majors. As is, he’s set to compete with Tommy Edman at short, but Edman can always go back to center.

The Mariners better have something planned here, because this, on top of the Eugenio Suárez trade, is awfully discouraging. Kelenic’s breakout 2023 did rather fall apart after an incredible April, but he’s still just 24 and he offers ample power. Moving him in order to dump a pair of bad contracts really didn’t seem to be on the docket. The Braves figure to have him replace Eddie Rosario as the left fielder against right-handers. Perhaps Vaughn Grissom could still figure into the mix as a starter against lefties and a backup option elsewhere, but he’ll also be prime trade bait if the Braves want to improve their rotation.

Marco Gonzales was traded from the Mariners to the Braves in a five-player deal.

We’re not fans of this trade for Seattle, but the bright spot for Mariners fans is that the possibility of Bryan Woo getting sent to the minors to save room for Gonzales in the rotation is gone. Gonzales, 31, underwent elbow surgery after posting a 5.22 ERA in 10 starts last season. He’s expected to be ready for Opening Day, and it’s possible he’ll step in as the Braves’ fifth starter if no better options present themselves.

The Braves and Mariners are in agreement on a five-player trade that will send Jarred Kelenic, Marco Gonzales and Evan White to Atlanta for Cole Phillips and Jackson Kowar.

Mariners fans probably aren’t going to be any happier about this deal. Seattle is shedding some payroll in moving Gonzales and White, but it comes at the price of losing Kelenic and not getting much in return. Maybe that will prove fine if Kelenic doesn’t develop, but it wouldn’t be surprising if he flourishes as Atlanta’s left fielder.

La Velle Neal III of the Star Tribune reports that Bryon Buxton is fully recovered from the arthroscopic knee surgery he had in October.

Buxton recently met with team trainers and coaches, who were pleased with his progress. Neal also reported that Buxton should return to baseball activities by the end of this year. Earlier this offseason, President of Baseball Operations Derek Falvey told reporters that the team planned to have the 29-year-old return to center field in 2024, so this development is a step in the right direction.

While the Padres seem adamant on unloading Juan Soto to free up some payroll, it looks like they’re trying to reload rather that rebuild — shifting the focus to their pitching staff. Acee notes that the Padres have at least checked in on all of the top starting pitchers available on the free agent market, and it seems as though they’re doing their due diligence on the trade front as well.

He adds that talks with the Yankees have stalled. Gómez has a history of running with things too early, but he does have his sources. The Padres would probably also have some interest in some of the Jays’ talented bullpen arms (Nate Pearson, Zach Pop, Yosver Zulueta, etc.).

Bauer spent this past season pitching for the Yokohama DeNA BayStars of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball after being released by the Dodgers back in January after serving the longest suspension (194 games) in the history of MLB and MLBPA’s joint domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy. Mets signed RHP Luis Severino to a one-year, $13 million contract.

The deal to bring Severino to Queens after nearly a decade in the Bronx is now official after he passed his physical. The 29-year-old right-hander represents a high-upside gamble for the Mets after posting a calamitous 6.65 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 79/34 K/BB ratio across 89 1/3 innings (19 appearances, 18 starts) this past season for the Yankees. Former Mets and Yankees reliever Adam Ottavino highlighted during an appearance earlier this week on SNY’s Baseball Night in NY that Severino dealt with issues related to the shape of his pitches, specifically his fastball and slider, which greatly contributed to his struggles during the 2023 campaign. If New York’s coaching staff helps resolve those issues, and he manages to stay relatively healthy, Severino will return to form as a reliable fantasy contributor. He’s a worthwhile late-round gamble for fantasy managers in drafts next spring.

According to Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times, the Dodgers have expressed interest in free agent right-hander Lucas Giolito.

Once considered among the top starting pitchers in all of baseball, the 29-year-old hurler has fallen on hard times over the past two years. He registered a miserable 8-15 record, 4.88 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and a 204/73 K/BB ratio across 184 1/3 innings between the White Sox, Angels and Guardians in 2023. If any organization can fix him though, it’s probably the Dodgers. They’re casting a wide net in their search for upgrades to their starting rotation — as they’ve also been linked to Jack Flaherty and Seth Lugo, in addition to their high-profile pursuits of Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Shohei Ohtani.

Andy Martino of SNY reports that trade talks between the Yankees and Padres regarding superstar outfielder Juan Soto have stalled.

Martino notes that the Padres are asking for a package involving Michael King, Drew Thorpe and as many as four or five additional prospects — in return for Soto and Trent Grisham. It seems as though the Yankees are reluctant to include King as part of the deal, and would rather ship Clarke Schmidt to the Padres instead. There’s still time for talks to pick back up, but in the meantime the Blue Jays have emerged as another potential suitor for Soto.
