Tarik Skubal pitched four scoreless innings, striking out eight, before Wednesday’s game between the Royals and Tigers was delayed and suspended.

The game will pick up Thursday at 1 p.m. CDT with the Tigers leading 4-0. Unfortunately, this is almost certainly it for Skubal, who allowed just two hits and walked none while throwing 52 pitches Wednesday. He gave up just one run over his final four starts to finish the season 7-3 with a 2.80 ERA and an exceptional 0.90 WHIP in 14 starts. He ought to be considered a top-25 SP for 2024.

S. Bieber - SP

Shane Bieber limited the Reds to one run in six innings and struck out seven in the Guardians’ 4-3 victory Wednesday.

This is a nice way to end a disappointing season. Bieber gave up 11 hard-hit balls tonight, but he allowed just five hits, none of them homers. He finishes up 6-6 with a 3.80 ERA in 21 starts. It’s possible the Guardians will look to trade him this winter, though his value is far lower than it’s been in the past. He’ll likely make $12 million-$14 million in his final season of arbitration next year.

Andrew Abbott lasted just 2 1/3 innings and gave up three runs Wednesday in a loss to the Guardians.

Abbott surrendered eight hits, and this would have been worse if the Guardians hadn’t kept running into outs. It’s truly seemed like Abbott has been running on fumes of late. Perhaps he could pitch some Sunday if the Reds remain in the race. Still, we’re not sure he has anything in the tank for October if his team advances. He’s completed five innings just once in his last seven starts, and his ERA stands at 3.87 ERA after being under 3.00 most of the way.

Jonathan India doubled twice and scored twice against the Guardians on Wednesday.

He had a hand in all three Reds runs tonight, as he knocked in the other. India had been just 7-for-48 since coming off the IL on Sept. 10, though he did have 11 walks in 13 games.

Chase Silseth (concussion) will start on Friday against the Athletics.

Silseth will be making his first start in the majors since August 26 when he suffered a concussion as a result of being hit in the head by an errant throw from a teammate. The 23-year-old right-hander holds a serviceable 4.10 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 53/23 K/BB ratio across 48 1/3 innings (15 appearances, seven starts) this season in the majors.

Max Scherzer (shoulder) threw a bullpen session on Wednesday.

It was a light bullpen session, according to Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News. It’s pretty remarkable that Scherzer is even close to facing hitters again just a few weeks after being diagnosed with a right shoulder teres major strain, which was expected to keep him sidelined for at least two months, if not longer. The 39-year-old right-hander is aiming to return to Texas’ starting rotation in the postseason.

Rangers activated RHP Josh Sborz from the 15-day injured list.

Sborz figures to pitch in low-leverage spots for the Rangers over the final few days of the regular season. The 29-year-old righty has been out since early September due to right shoulder soreness.

Rangers optioned LHP Jake Latz to Triple-A Round Rock.

Latz heads back to the minors with Josh Sbotz returning from the injured list. The 27-year-old southpaw wound up making two relief appearances for the Rangers during his brief stint in the majors.
