PGA DFS Coverage for The Honda Classic

The west coast swing ends with another win from Jon Rahm continuing his historic run.  While I feel awful for Max Homa, it’s hard to stop a man on a mission.  The PGA Tour leaves the west coast and heads east to the sunshine state for a few weeks starting with the Honda Classic.  PGA National has played host to this event since 2007 and is usually ranked inside the Top 5 toughest courses on the PGA Tour schedule.  The winner Sepp Straka finished at just 10 under par for the week.  On top of the course being tough, we will see a significant drop off in field strength.  You will see bogeys in bunches in Palm Beach Gardens this weekend..

The Field: The Honda Classic

Defending champion Sepp Straka returns to defend his title against a very lackluster field in Florida.  This is not one of the “designated events'' which requires the Top 20 PIP players to participate.  The highest ranked players in the world golf rankings are Sungjae Im at number 18 and Billy Horschel at number 19.  I counted just 18 players that are inside the Top 100 in the world scheduled to play this weekend.  There will be a lot of good young talent playing this weekend like Pierceson Coody, former number one amateur in the world.  He has won twice on the Korn Ferry Tour since turning pro back in June.  Andrew Kozan grew up in West Palm and grew up going to this event.  This is a week where you fade the chalk because anything can happen.  You should not be playing a big portion of your bankroll with so many untrustworthy golfers.

The Course: PGA National

The course is a Par 70 and not long by PGA Tour standards, measuring out 7,125 yards but it can humble you.  Seven of the last 10 winners have failed to reach double digits under par for the weekend.  One of the reasons a lot of the big name players avoid this tournament is because they don’t feel like being embarrassed.  Like most Florida courses, there is a ton of water to avoid.  It also features narrow fairways and bunkers all over the place.  Similar to last week at Riviera, these players will miss fairways, so scrambling will be a key stat once again.  Distance is not an advantage this week as there are a lot of forced lay ups.  One last thing you should be made aware of is a string of holes affectionately known as “The Bear Trap.”  The Par-3 15th, Par-4 16th and Par-3 17th all feature water on nearly every full shot.  These holes basically make or break your week at PGA National.  The players who avoid the big numbers this weekend will take home the title.

The Weather: Palm Beach Gardens, Florida

The weather looks to be pretty terrific this weekend in Palm Beach Gardens.  The temperatures should be in the mid-80s throughout the tournament.  The humidity will be the biggest challenge in Florida.  While wind can play a factor in the scoring this weekend it looks to be pretty tame as of now with it peaking in the low teens.  There is no rain in the forecast either.

How To Watch The Honda Classic

The Honda Classic will have plenty of coverage on television throughout the weekend.  We will see the tournament air on the Golf Channel on Thursday and Friday from 2-6pm ET.  Once we get to the weekend the coverage will split between Golf Channel and NBC.  We start on Saturday with the Golf Channel airing the tournament from 1-3pm ET and then over to NBC from 3-6pm ET.  The Sunday final round starts on Golf Channel from 1-3pm ET and then moves over to NBC from 3-6pm ET.
