Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that the Padres are interested in acquiring Brewers ace right-hander Corbin Burnes.

While the Padres seem adamant on unloading Juan Soto to free up some payroll, it looks like they’re trying to reload rather that rebuild — shifting the focus to their pitching staff. Acee notes that the Padres have at least checked in on all of the top starting pitchers available on the free agent market, and it seems as though they’re doing their due diligence on the trade front as well.

Héctor Gómez of Z101 Digital reports the Blue Jays are currently the favorites to land Juan Soto in a trade with the Padres.

He adds that talks with the Yankees have stalled. Gómez has a history of running with things too early, but he does have his sources. If something materializes here, it’s easy to imagine Alek Manoah being involved. The Padres would probably also have some interest in some of the Jays’ talented bullpen arms (Nate Pearson, Zach Pop, Yosver Zulueta, etc.).

Mets signed RHP Andre Scrubb to a minor league contract.

Scrubb made 38 relief appearances for the Astros from 2020-2021, but didn’t pitch this past season due to injury. MLB.com’s Anthony Dicomo adds that the 28-year-old righty has been throwing in the mid-90’s recently in the Puerto Rican Winter League. There’s a chance he could crack New York’s bullpen at some point this upcoming season.

MLB.com’s Mark Sheldon reports the Reds have no interest in signing free agent right-hander Trevor Bauer.

Bauer spent this past season pitching for the Yokohama DeNA BayStars of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball after being released by the Dodgers back in January after serving the longest suspension (194 games) in the history of MLB and MLBPA’s joint domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy. The soon-to-be 33-year-old right-hander is a free agent this offseason, but it’s unclear whether any major league team will sign him at the moment.

Mejia last appeared in the majors with the Royals during the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign and will return to Washington as extra organizational depth. Ornelas returns to San Diego as extra organizational depth after slashing .285/.371/.452 with 15 homers and eight steals across 552 plate appearances this past season between Double-A San Antonio and Triple-A El Paso. The 23-year-old has yet to reach the big leagues, but his opportunity could come eventually if he keeps sticking around in the upper minors for a few more years.

Didder has spent a decade in the minors and has yet to reach the big leagues. The 29-year-old is capable of handling multiple defensive positions and also posted a respectable .805 OPS with 13 homers and 32 stolen bases across 392 plate appearances this past season between Double-A San Antonio and Triple-A El Paso. He’s merely extra minor league depth at this stage of his career.

Astros signed INF Jesús Bastidas to a minor league contract.

It doesn’t come as a total shock that Houston has an affinity for undersized infielders. Bastidas spent the last eight years in the Yankees’ minor league system, finally reaching the Triple-A level by the end of this past season. The 25-year-old infielder will presumably head to Triple-A Sugar Land as extra depth for the Astros to open next season.
