ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports that the Brewers and outfield prospect Jackson Chourio are in agreement on an eight-year, $82 million contract.

The deal also includes two club options and escalators that can take the contract’s total value to $142.5 million. When he puts pen to paper, it will obliterate the record for a contract with a minor leaguer who has yet to play a game in the majors, surpassing Luis Robert Jr.'s $50 million deal with the White Sox before the 2020 season. Chourio spent most of the season in Double-A, where he batted .280/.336/.467 with 22 homers and 43 steals over 122 games. He will turn 20 years old in March, and with this agreement, he will likely break camp with the big league club and could be a top pick for NL Rookie of the Year, which would give the Brewers an extra draft pick in 2025.

Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulous said in a press conference that Vaughn Grissom would get a look in left field if the season started today.

Grissom will play left field this winter in Puerto Rico after hitting .330/.419/.501 in Triple-A during the 2023 season. Anthopoulous also said that Forrest Wall could be another option for left field. Grissom has yet to play a game professionally on the outfield grass, so the 22-year-old will have to adapt quickly to secure a spot in the opening-day roster.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that the Brewers are showing interest in free-agent left-hander Wade Miley.

Miley surprisingly declined his $10 million mutual option earlier this offseason, but it seems like he and the Brewers are looking to reunite. The 37-year-old posted a 3.14 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and 79/38 K/BB ratio across 120 1/3 innings (23 starts) last year for the Brew Crew. With Milwaukee cutting ties with Brandon Woodruff and rumored to be in the market to trade their ace, Corbin Burnes, adding an innings eater like Miley seems like an ideal move for the Brewers.

La Velle Neal III of the Star Tribune reports that Bryon Buxton is fully recovered from the arthroscopic knee surgery he had in October.

Buxton recently met with team trainers and coaches, who were pleased with his progress. Neal also reported that Buxton should return to baseball activities by the end of this year. Earlier this offseason, President of Baseball Operations Derek Falvey told reporters that the team planned to have the 29-year-old return to center field in 2024, so this development is a step in the right direction.

Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that the Padres are interested in acquiring Brewers ace right-hander Corbin Burnes.

While the Padres seem adamant on unloading Juan Soto to free up some payroll, it looks like they’re trying to reload rather that rebuild — shifting the focus to their pitching staff. Acee notes that the Padres have at least checked in on all of the top starting pitchers available on the free agent market, and it seems as though they’re doing their due diligence on the trade front as well.

He adds that talks with the Yankees have stalled. Gómez has a history of running with things too early, but he does have his sources. If something materializes here, it’s easy to imagine Alek Manoah being involved. The Padres would probably also have some interest in some of the Jays’ talented bullpen arms (Nate Pearson, Zach Pop, Yosver Zulueta, etc.).

Bauer spent this past season pitching for the Yokohama DeNA BayStars of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball after being released by the Dodgers back in January after serving the longest suspension (194 games) in the history of MLB and MLBPA’s joint domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy. The soon-to-be 33-year-old right-hander is a free agent this offseason, but it’s unclear whether any major league team will sign him at the moment.
