Chandler Rome and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic report that the Astros have reached an agreement with free agent catcher Victor Caratini.

Robert Murray of FanSided adds that it will be a two-year pact. No word yet on the financial details, but this likely signifies that Martin Maldonado will sign elsewhere. Caratini, 30, hit .259/.327/.383 with seven homers and 25 RBI over 226 plate appearances with the Brewers during the 2023 campaign. Expect him to share the load behind the plate with Yainer Diaz.

Pirates acquired LHP Marco Gonzales and cash considerations from the Braves for a player to be named later.

The 31-year-old left-hander’s tenure in Atlanta will be remembered fondly. It’s not yet clear how much cash the Braves are sending to the Pirates in the deal, but they’ll be covering a portion of his $12 million salary for 2024. Once considered one of the more reliable left-handed starters in the American League, Gonzales has posted an underwhelming 4.36 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and a 137/68 K/BB ratio over 233 innings in 42 starts over the last two seasons. He’ll bring some stability to an otherwise youthful Bucs’ rotation.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that the Angels have agreed to a one-year, $4.25 million contract with right-hander Luis García.

The 36-year-old hurler had a bit of a down year for the Padres in 2023 — posting a 4.07 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and a 53/24 K/BB ratio across 59 2/3 innings in 61 appearances. He’ll another quality, dependable right-handed arm to the middle of the Angels’ bullpen.

Jeff Passan of ESPN reports that the Pirates have agreed to a deal to acquire left-hander Marco Gonzales from the Braves for a player to be named later and cash considerations.

So the Braves flip Gonzales — who they acquired from the Mariners in the Jarred Kelenic deal on Saturday — to the Pirates and save a bit of cash in the process. The 31-year-old southpaw struggled to a 5.22 ERA over 10 starts for the M’s in 2023, but he’ll help to stabilize a Pirates’ rotation that could use some veteran leadership and moxie. The Braves are expected to cover a portion of the $12 million that’s owed to Gonzales in 2024.

Jeff Passan of ESPN reports that the Yankees have agreed to acquire outfielder Alex Verdugo from the Red Sox.

In exchange, Passan notes that the Red Sox will receive right-handers Greg Weissert, Richard Fitts and Nicholas Judice. Verdugo is entering his final season before free agency and hit a disappointing .264/.324/.421 with 13 long balls, 54 RBI and five stolen bases over 602 plate appearances with the Red Sox during the 2023 season. The Yankees get a left-handed outfield bat that they’ve been seeking for, but this won’t take them away from their pursuit of Juan Soto.

Robles had been sidelined since mid-June due to back spasms, but it sounds like he’s now finally fully healthy and ready to get some work in over the winter.
