MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks August 31

Joan Adon, Washington Nationals – LOWER than 4.0 Strikeouts

This strikeout line is a bit too high for Joan Adon, especially considering the matchup. Adon has fewer than four Ks in three of his four MLB starts this month since returning to the Washington Nationals rotation. That includes three straight starts coming into tonight. The only time he had more (7) was against a swing-happy Cincinnati Reds lineup in early August. The Nats right-hander only has a 20.8% K rate this season and had a 20.7% K rate at Triple-A earlier this year. We also saw low strikeout numbers from Adon last season when he was up in the bigs, with a 17.7% strikeout rate and four or fewer Ks in eight of 14 starts. He’ll face a Miami Marlins offense that has a low 16.4% K rate against right-handed pitching over the past week and just a 19.7% K rate vs righties over the past month. Adon actually just faced the Marlins in his last start and struck out only three across six innings. That recent history makes it hard to see Adon having a better outing in this rematch.

Lance Lynn, Los Angeles Dodgers – HIGHER than 2.5 Earned Runs

Lance Lynn has pitched well overall since being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers, with a 2.03 ERA in five starts with his new team. However, we also just saw Lynn give up four runs on 10 hits in his last start against the Boston Red Sox. That’s more like the Lynn we saw earlier this season when he had a 6.47 ERA before the Chicago White Sox dealt him away. His 4.68 FIP over this past month is also pretty worrisome and tells us he’s been getting lucky compared to that low ERA. Lynn could have another shaky outing in a tough matchup tonight against the Atlanta Braves. This offense has been arguably the MLB’s best against right-handed pitching all year. Over the past week, the Braves have a .355 wOBA, .298 BA, 123 wRC+, and low 15.0% K rate against righties. Lynn also recently faced Atlanta in July and gave up four runs over 5.1 innings. The Dodgers righty has also now allowed 3+ earned runs in 11 of his last 15 starts going back to his time with Chicago, including in two of five starts with LA.
