MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks August 28

Kyle Harrison, San Francisco Giants – HIGHER Than 5.5 Strikeouts

Kyle Harrison was a big strikeout pitcher in the minors and he showcased that elite-level swing-and-miss ability in his MLB debut last week. The San Francisco Giants top prospect struck out five in just 3.1 innings against the Philadelphia Phillies in that initial outing. Harrison should get to 6+ strikeouts in his second start tonight for a few different reasons. While he might still be on a slightly limited pitch count, Harrison could go 75-80 pitches according to manager Gabe Kapler. Plus, the Giants gave him an extra day of rest heading into this start. It’s also notable that San Fran used up a ton of relievers over the weekend series with the Atlanta Braves

It looks like Harrison could go five innings, at least, which would boost his strikeout upside. At Triple-A this season before getting called up, the Giants left-hander had an impressive 35.6% K rate with 105 strikeouts over 65.2 innings. It was a similar story last year at Double-A with a 36.4% K rate and 127 punchouts over 84 innings. Harrison may give up a few runs, as he did against Philly, but the strikeouts will be there. The Cincinnati Reds, tonight’s opponent, have a higher 25.9% K rate vs left-handed pitching over the past two weeks. The Reds also have a top 10 K rate against lefties in August. Harrison can take advantage of this young lineup that’s had strikeout issues over the past couple of months now.

Cristian Javier, Houston Astros – LOWER Than 22.5 Fantasy Points

Despite his breakout season in 2022, Cristian Javier has been a profitable pitcher to fade this year. We’ll do it again tonight and look for lower than 22.5 fantasy points from the Houston Astros starter in his road matchup against the Boston Red Sox. On Underdog Fantasy, pitchers get positive fantasy points with a win, a quality start, strikeouts, and innings pitched while earned runs are negative points. Let’s examine all of those factors. First off, Javier is having trouble limiting the runs lately with a 5.59 ERA in the month of August (four starts) and a 5.00 ERA since the All-Star break. He’s also allowed 3+ earned runs in six of his last eight starts. Then there’s Javier’s road struggles with a 5.33 ERA on the road this year compared to a 3.40 home ERA. As for the strikeouts, the Astros righty has four or fewer punchouts in four straight outings and has a poor 13.3% K rate this month. His 21.3% K rate this season is way down compared to his 33.2% last year.

Finally, there’s tonight’s matchup against the Boston Red Sox. This offense is very tough on right-handers and will make it tough for Javier to rack up Ks or limit runs – let alone record a win or quality start. Over the past two weeks, the Red Sox boast a .378 wOBA, 135 wRC+, .305 batting average, and a low 18.4% K rate vs righties. Boston has been a top-5 lineup against right-handed pitching all season and they’re even better lately. Plus, the Red Sox have one of the best home offenses in baseball. Javier also just faced the Sox last start and put up 20 fantasy points with three earned runs allowed, three strikeouts, and just five innings pitched. We can expect a slightly worse start on the road for this rematch.
