MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks August 11

Matt Olson, Atlanta Braves – HIGHER than 1.5 Total Bases

Sometimes the MLB board at Underdog Fantasy presents a matchup or pick that should be a lock any way you look at it. That’s what we have here with Matt Olson taking on Luis Severino tonight. You’ve surely realized by now, but Olson is on another level offensively. Since the All-Star break, the Atlanta Braves first baseman has hit 14 home runs in 29 games and is batting .350 over this past month. Olson is also hitting .404 over the past 15 games with eight homers in this recent stretch. He’s recorded multiple total bases in 11 of his last 16 games coming into tonight while basically homering every other day. If you’ve watched the Bettor Sports Betting show, you’ve likely heard Howard Bender pound the table for Olson and how backing him every day is a profitable strategy right now. So, let’s do it tonight because this matchup is a glorious one.

Severino has been abysmal lately with an 11.71 ERA since the start of July and 18 runs allowed over his past three starts alone (9.1 innings). The New York Yankees right-hander is getting rocked almost every time out and it’s hard to imagine him holding down Olson and this elite Braves offense. Severino also has a terrible 9.89 ERA and 2.20 WHIP on the road this year. Meanwhile, the lefty-swinging Olson boasts better numbers against right-handers (.279 BA, .638 SLG) than southpaws (.266 BA, .569 SLG). He also has better splits at home (.293 BA, .679 SLG) than on the road (.260 BA, .567 SLG). Again, all signs are pointing towards Olson recording 2+ total bases.

Jack Flaherty, Baltimore Orioles – HIGHER than 6.0 Strikeouts

In terms of MLB Trade Deadline pickups, Jack Flaherty has not disappointed for the Baltimore Orioles thus far. He’s put up two solid starts since joining the O’s, with eight strikeouts in both outings. The right-hander has also been much more effective and consistent lately compared to a shaky first half of the season. Flaherty has a 3.10 ERA since the start of July dating back to his last month with the St. Louis Cardinals. He’s also seen an uptick in strikeouts with a 26.4% K rate and 10.6 K/9 over five starts since the All-Star break, compared to a 21.8% K rate and 8.64 K/9 over the first few months of the season. Flaherty has struck out 6+ in four of five starts since the break as well, with 7+ in three of those.

Tonight, he’ll face a San Diego Padres offense that’s been slumping lately with some poor numbers against right-handed pitching. Over the past week vs righties, the Padres have a poor .285 wOBA, .231 BA, and .120 ISO with a higher 25.7% K rate. We just saw Orioles rookie Grayson Rodriguez strike out six against this lineup last night and Flaherty should have similar (or better) success. In fact, four of the last six right-handers to face San Diego have had 6+ strikeouts.
