MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks August 11

Trea Turner, Philadelphia Phillies – HIGHER than 1.5 Total Bases

In last Friday’s MLB Underdog picks article, Trea Turner was a focal point of our player props as the Philadelphia Phillies began a homestand. Despite struggling terribly before that, Turner was due to get standing ovations and full support from the Philly crowd when he came to bat that night. Well, he responded with an RBI single and helped us cash the pick. Since then, the Phillies shortstop has been looking more like the All-Star we know. He’s hitting .370 over the past seven games with eight RBI, two home runs, and six extra-base hits in this span. He’s also recorded 2+ total bases in six straight games coming into tonight. Until he cools off, let’s continue to back Turner in a good matchup here.

Dallas Keuchel is starting for the Minnesota Twins in just his second outing of the season. He was decent in his first start with five innings of one-run ball, but it could’ve been a lot worse. The left-hander also allowed eight hits and two walks with zero strikeouts while getting out of a few jams. Remember, the former Cy Young winner is still an aging pitcher who got knocked around for a 9.20 ERA last year and a 5.28 ERA in 2021. At Triple-A before making his Twins debut, Keuchel had a 4.21 FIP in six starts with the same number of hits allowed as strikeouts (28) and 12 walks mixed in. The Phillies should get to Keuchel here and Turner will ideally be a part of it. He’s also 4-for-9 in his career vs the southpaw.

Johan Oviedo, Pittsburgh Pirates – LOWER than 5.5 Hits Allowed

A month ago, we wouldn’t dare bet on a pitcher facing the Cincinnati Reds offense. That narrative has flipped lately with the young Reds hitters in a slump collectively. The Cincy offense is averaging just 3.3 runs per game over the past seven contests while going 1-6 in this stretch. Against right-handed pitchers over the past week, specifically, the Reds have a low .303 wOBA, .225 batting average, and a league-worst 35.3% strikeout rate. This has been the case since the All-Star break as well with the Cincinnati offense having a .301 wOBA, .224 BA, and 29.1% K rate vs righties over the last month.

Pittsburgh Pirates starter Johan Oviedo can limit the damage in this matchup and allow less than 5.5 hits. The right-hander has been very effective recently with a 2.32 ERA and .147 BAA in five starts since the All-Star break. Oviedo has gone under 5.5 hits allowed in four of these last five outings and in 10 of his last 16 starts going back to mid-May. He’ll also benefit from pitching at home, where he boasts a better batting average against (.230) and WHIP (1.19) than on the road.
