MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks May 29

Rich Hill, Pittsburgh Pirates – OVER 5.0 Strikeouts

Rich Hill isn’t usually a pitcher we like to back, but we’re doing it against a strikeout-prone San Francisco Giants team. The Giants have a 27.4% strikeout rate vs. left-handed pitching this season (3rd-worst in MLB) and that K rate has risen to 29.4% over the past two weeks. This lineup has been one to target all season when looking at strikeout props for southpaws. Meanwhile, Hill has gone over five strikeouts in five of 10 starts this season and he’s been at exactly five punchouts in two other outings. The veteran lefty is averaging 5.2 K’s per start but he’s been able to take advantage of strikeout-prone offenses this year. Plus, we get Hill on the road tonight where he’s been much better. The Pittsburgh Pirates starter boasts a 2.31 ERA and 26:6 K:BB ratio in four road starts compared to a 5.83 ERA and 26:11 K:BB ratio in six home outings.

Paul Blackburn, Oakland Athletics – UNDER 3.5 Strikeouts

Tonight marks the 2023 debut of Paul Blackburn, who’s missed the first two months of this season for a couple of injuries and the birth of his second child. Unfortunately for the Oakland Athletics pitcher, he has to face a dangerous Atlanta Braves offense right off the bat. The Braves have a .323 wOBA vs. right-handed pitching this season with an average 23.2% strikeout rate. Over the past two weeks, Atlanta has a lower 21.7% K rate vs. righties with a .326 wOBA. It’s a tough ask for Blackburn to have success in this matchup for his start of the season, even if it’s at home. As for Blackburn, he’s not a big strikeout pitcher with a career-high 19.1% K rate last season while usually sitting in the 15% range. The under 3.5 strikeouts prop is juiced to -125 on DraftKings Sportsbook. Don’t expect him to rack up Ks tonight vs. the Braves.
