MLB Underdog Fantasy Top Picks May 22
Brandon Lowe, Tampa Bay Rays – OVER 1.5 Hits+Runs+RBI
On the surface, Brandon Lowe is having a subpar season with just a .204 batting average. He definitely hasn’t been as good as other Tampa Bay hitters like Yandy Diaz, Wander Franco, or Randy Arozarena. Still, the lefty-hitting second baseman can be a key run-producer for the Rays in the right situations. That’s what we’re targeting tonight with Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Chris Bassitt on the mound. First off, Bassitt is due for some negative regression with a 4.52 FIP that’s way higher than his 3.05 ERA, not to mention a .197 BABIP as well. Lowe should be hitting third or fourth in the Tampa lineup and have plenty of RBI opportunities. As for Lowe’s own hitting, he’s on a mini hot streak lately with a .320 BA over the past seven games. For what it’s worth, Lowe is 1-for-3 in his career vs. Bassitt with that one hit being a homer.
Alec Bohm, Philadelphia Phillies – OVER 0.5 Singles
Betting on a singles prop is always risky, but it makes sense for a guy like Alec Bohm. The Philadelphia Phillies’ corner infielder actually had the fifth-most singles in the whole MLB last season with 131. He has the power to knock home runs and extra-base hits, but Bohm’s technique at the plate is to take what pitchers give him, which includes plenty of singles. Of his 45 hits so far this year, 32 have been single-baggers. Look for Bohm to have success at the plate tonight against Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Tommy Henry. The young starter has a 5.00 ERA and 1.48 WHIP this season and he’s particularly struggled on the road. Bohm, meanwhile, hit .352 against lefties last year and is batting .275 against southpaws this season.
